Standing Start

When learning new tasks, I definitely prefer a steady start and build-up of momentum to a mad start in which I need to unlearn many things to get it right.
When receiving instructions, I often repeat back to a person what I have heard.  So often I am corrected.  It turns out that what I heard was not what was said, or my understanding was limited to my experience, and this is a new experience.
The kind of teaching I like is to have something explained while it is being done and then do it under supervision.  This enables me to practice what I think has been said in a safe environment.  Errors in understanding are eliminated early and I am less likely to get it wrong from the start.
Being human I get it wrong down the track but to me an adjustment is way easier than a complete relearn.
The reason I have gone down this track is that I was thinking about vehicle standing starts.  Often how fast a vehicle is, is determined by how fast it is going after 10 seconds.  All that can be done has been done to ensure the vehicle is the best it can be for the 10 second test.
To me that is like initially learning it right.  Mistakes and problems have been ironed out in the initial phase.
When I see performers at the Olympics on the ice ring or pursuing any endeavour, there has been hours spent getting it right.  If the endeavour is a car race over thousands of kilometres. then the getting it right phase includes endurance elements.  Whatever the case the person or vehicle is designed for optimum performance when it is needed.
I do find that is the case with me.  I do not mind slow starts, as long as I get it right.  When I have it right, I am free to increase speed.  Things may happen but the nature of the unexpected is it is unexpected.
Maybe a Plan B will be needed, but a Plan B built on a failed Plan A is a prospect I can live with.  I have done right all I know to do and maybe the future is unchartered territory, but it is built on a wealth of tried knowledge.
