Spurrier

Spurrier
Man.  It was my turn to choose a word at random from the dictionary.  I did the usual shut my eyes and turn the book all around so I did not know if it was the front or the back but maybe it would have been better had I known.  My finger fell on the word “Spurrier” or “spur-maker”  It was like the dictionary was sparing words.
Going on the internet did not help.  The first dictionary definition was “Spurrier – One who makes spurs.”  I looked further afield for inspiration and found only “spurrier – maker of spurs.”  I was clutching at straws enough.  I did not need that.
I guess my ignorance has come to the fore here.  My first thought was like the wild west.  The riders of them thar horses had spurs.  My initial thought was there are no call for Spurriers these days, but then I had a thought.
I have learned to cherish those times.  I thought of how many horses and riders there are around the place.  I thought of the races.  But I think they use whips rather than spurs.  Shows how much I know really, and how into horses I am.
I thought I would look up spurs.  I could get wallpaper and see the logo.  Turned out it was the official site for the soccer club Tottenham Hotspur.  I had no idea finding something about spurs would be so difficult.  I learned there is a San Antonio Spurs basketball club.  Didn’t know that before.  I am not sure knowing that makes much difference to me though if I ever hear them mentions I will be able to nod sagely and say I know them.
I guess the making of spurs is a fine art.  Make them too sharp and the horse could not go on.  Counter productive really.  Most (in fact all) horse and riders I have seen are going from someplace to someplace.  Maybe they did go for like Sunday afternoon rides (but I had never considered it before).
Too blunt and the spur would be like an irritation at best.  The horse would be likely to do its own thing.
Bit like the only time I have ever ridden a horse.  I had no spurs or whips.  To say the horse walked would be claiming it moved too fast.  It was more like an amble.  The only time it moved a bit faster was after we turned for home.
Arr this is more like it.  I found “How to choose the right spurs for you and your horse.”  I also saw a site that posed the question “Horse Riding Spurs: Should You Really Be Using Them?”  But bit late to go there.
I only looked into spurs because spurrier was the word.  Was what I found out useful to me?  Probably not.  Will I use what I have found out?  Probably not.  Will it change my life?  Definitely not.
