Song Writing

30/10/2019

Song writing can be such a weird process.  It can for me anyway.
The first song I ever wrote was called “The Bike Song.”  I was at a friend’s place.  He had a really top piano that no one played.  They were always glad of my visits.  He would be on the bongo’s while I played.
I felt a song coming on.  I raced home and did the song on my piano.  A few days later I played it on his.  It is amazing how a good instrument can make something sound even better.  I know others liked it as they, like me, marvelled.
Usually the music and words are almost simultaneous but not always.  There was one song I felt had a really good melody but absolutely no words.  The words were just not coming.  I went out onto my balcony and looked around.  Suddenly the words came in a rush.  It is one of my favourite songs now.
I have written one country song.  A couple of us were sharing a house.  The other guy went for a sleep.  In the time he was gone I wrote a song.  When I told him I had just written a song he like me could not believe it.  Often the words need tweaking and changes need to be made.  Not this one though.  It was like it was complete immediately.    There are gatherings where people get together and showcase their creations.  I played it there and was told I should record it.
These days when I go to a club and a single performer is singing it is like they have a full band backing them at the push of a button.  It was not always like that.  Ok I am not old enough to remember when tree branches hit on a hollow log were as good as it got but I do remember when Band in a Box was.  I used Band in a Box to record some of my songs.  I was sort of into it.  I bought various cd’s to get different sounds.  I had to be all the instruments.  The good thing was I could play the piano and drums or a flute or guitar would sound.  I guess the frustrated lead guitarist came out in me.
I even had a microphone with a pop filter on it.  I did not know what it was called until just then when I looked it up.  It intercepts over pronounced p’s t’s and s’s along with heavy breathing.  The heavy breathing sounds bad.  But it would sound worse without a pop filter.  It also intercepts spit.  Not that I needed that of course.  How come my nose just grew?
I used a big Apple computer to do it.  It was one that fitted into a car but the weight of it was a challenge for the car springs.  Still once I had all the bits and pieces it did the job.
I could be a one-man band.  Well almost.  Someone did harmony for me on a few numbers and it sounded really good.  I recorded an album’s worth of some of my favourite songs.  I called it “Look to the Skies.”
Reminiscing is supposed to be good for a person.  I know I am doing a bit of it, but they were good times.  I like that I still have something to show for it.  I have put my songs on my web site.  That is sort of my place for storing stuff.
