Something to Believe In

Someone emailed ABC Breakfast.  He said that when voting he received a plethora of “How to Vote” leaflets.  When he was ready to vote, he went through them and found one from a local take away joint that was a menu done up like a how to vote card.  His comment was something like “I would not be surprised if “Spicy Bun” got up.”
I imagine I am going to move on from the whole election thing soon, but I was watching the Drum election issue.  They had a good panel.  Talk about different views.  What impressed me though was how polite they all were.  Maybe it being 1:15am had taken all the fight from them.  There was no talking over each other, and where they agreed they agreed.
One of the things I found really amazing was how someone can see the same thing I do, and have a totally different take on it.  I have mentioned before how someone could not believe how so many people could see the same thing and have a different description of what they saw.  That reinforces to me the old saying of “never assume.”  I winced when I was with two people I knew had diametrically opposed views, and one started talking like their view was the only one.  Fortunately that came to nothing.  I have been in a situation that was the same, and it became a shouting match, and what was being done could not be gone on with.
They were analysing what had happened.  I did like what Stan Grant said.  He made the point that Australians do not like something forced on them, even if they believe in it.  He called it social engineering as opposed to organic.  By organic he meant something inside a person, and when it is inside enough people it tends to just happen.
One of the people they had on the panel was Layne Beachley, the seven times world champion surfer.  It really should not come as a surprise that she chose to surf with “beach” in her name.
A couple of things she said really stood out to me.  I had never heard them before, but they resounded in me.  The first was “we all need someone to believe in, something to believe in, and someone to believe in us.”  The second thing she said was “the shoulders I stood on, on the way up, were the same ones I leaned on, on the way down.”  She was relaying how thankful she was for the help she got on the way.
It seems to me, it does not matter if I am an individual trying to achieve something, or a company like Google or Microsoft or Apple or a really small company, everything achieved starts in a person and to grow needs others on board.  People who share the vision.  People with needed skill sets to make the idea a reality.
A guy has just finished riding his push bike around the world.  He was raising money for something one of his grandparents died from.  A lady interviewed said “what an inspiring young lad.  And I’m his mother.”  The interviewer spoke to another couple of people that were with him the whole way.  He believed in someone, he believed in something, and others believed in him.
Way to go I reckon.
