Solo

I was listening to a song this morning and enjoying it and it seemed to be building to a solo of some sort.  Sure enough there was a crescendo and then an acoustic guitar went for it.
It reminded me of how in the Muppets the band was playing what was a slow waltz like piece and one guitarist said to another “if animal [the drummer] goes, I go with him.”  Meaning if it all got too much for the drummer and he broke loose playing, the guitarist was going to too.
As long as I can remember I have enjoyed a solo.  Sometimes it is guitars, and other times it is sax or piano or whatever.  It really does not matter to me.  In songs I enjoy I tend to love the words, and then when just the instrument play and it fits, I love it.
I am playing a random play list at the moment and one song yesterday was really rocky.  Like head banger stuff.   Merril was nearby so I asked her “Is that loud enough?”  She commented I was not banging my head at the time, and I was not.  But I was enjoying the melody (contrary to what may be the opinion of some there is melody in rock.  It is just accompanied by heavy stuff.)  In heavy rock and roll bands they tend to cut loose with an electric guitar solo.  If the tune is good, I am into it.
There seems to be a school of thought that suggest when someone becomes a Christian anything they found enjoyable in the past is taboo.  They are to walk around looking like they are swallowing prunes, and it is compulsory to have a serious looking face.
It does not help that in my case one of my names means “stern faced.”  A guy at work commented one time that a sense of fun and me were incompatible.  The boss just said something like “you just need to get to know him.”
There are things I avoid and am told to avoid but looking at outcomes it totally makes sense.  It glitters and entices but as the saying goes, “all that glitters is not gold.”  In all things I am not reliant on myself, but on the help.
I was in a band for a long time (we were legends in our own minds).  I played piano and sang. We had a bass player and drummer, and we were often joined by a sax player and guitarist.  We would jam at the drop of a hat.  In fact, the bass player once rang me and asked, “did you drop your hat?”
We loved to sing and throw to an instrument for a solo or three.  We were all of like mind.  Solo’s may have been only a part, but they were a legitimate part we all loved.
Some things never change, and I do not want them ever to change.
