Socks

If a person has to do mundane stuff, then it is best a lesson is learned.  Happened to me today.  Matching socks.
I have a container that all my clean cloths go in.  Every now and then I go through it and sort it into piles like socks, shirts, pants etc.  The most challenging pile to me is the socks pile.  The problem is, when socks look incredibly alike.  I have one pair that look so much alike that I figure if I can’t tell them apart no one else will be able to.
Sometimes socks are thrust together without much of a “get to know you” time.  It is definitely not a match made in heaven.  It is made here on earth, but it works for me.
It was how I sort them that reinforced a process to me which I do for all major tasks as well.  I go from easy to hard.  If all the socks are blue except two that are red, then there is a good chance the red ones are a pair.  I guess it is a process of elimination.
Today it was easy to account for the grey ones and the black ones and the ones that had very distinguishing features.  That left the harder ones to put together.  It was easier when the others had been dealt with.
I find I do that with any major task where I can.  When I can knock off the easier tasks early it looks like I have a heap done.  The hard stuff may be ahead but with the easier stuff out the way, there is less clutter, and I can concentrate on the task at hand.
My “to do” list today looked full.  But I did the easier stuff first and it was amazing how much I crossed off.  What was harder and more time consuming still loomed, but I could face it having experienced success.  Having a win inspires confidence in me.
It is not all wins though.  Sometimes I come a cropper.  Still, I do like what Malcolm X said.  “… Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.”
I guess since I have not been out in the workforce, I am learning lessons from everyday stuff.  I have learned from gardening and even washing up.  I have not learned anything from vacuuming as I just don’t do it.  Just as well really that I learn from other things, or it would be as Jared Kushner said “the rest of it is just stuff.”
For me, learning things from the most mundane events is what can lift the event to memorable.  Much of the time the task is not memorable.  It is just something that needs to be done and the sooner the better.
Not always though.  Sometimes it is like a light switch goes on in my head.  If it was just random meaningless thoughts, I would need to acknowledge I have a problem (this helps me remain in denial).  But I find the smallest thing can be applied to the biggest thing.  It is the principle, not the task.
Maybe I am clutching at straws here, but this set of drawers looks like a lesson but maybe it is not as open and shut as it seems.  I think I can learn from lying on the bed.  Now ……. what…… lesso………zzzz
