Small Things

I read in an email I get a heading that said, “the value of small contributions.”  It is something I have held to in a long time.  I put it as “lots of little make a lot.”
I have referenced it before, but it is something I return to in my mind.  At work we had a company collect, count, and bank our money.  I will never forget talking with the director and him saying, “we are not one of the big players, but we are like the seagulls around the trawlers, we get enough.”  When I visited their site boy did I see they got enough.
I find that sort of thing in the way I do things.  Sometimes I have a huge task.  I am in the habit of breaking it down into smaller parts.  Eventually when they are done I have achieved a huge thing.  What may have been daunting becomes manageable.
I remember hearing about a guy in the great depression.  Companies had gone to the wall and were deemed at that time to be worth very little.  This person had very little but what he did have he invested in those companies a bit at a time.  Eventually things turned around and the companies again became worth heaps, and he was then worth heaps.
If I despise small things I can be the one that misses out.  That does not mean every small thing will be a winner, but I do not want to miss the potential in some small thing.  Just because something is dormant does not mean it cannot come to life.
An experiment was done where a dollar was left on the sidewalk in five cent pieces.  It was passed over by everyone.  Then a dollar coin was put on the sidewalk, and it was snapped up immediately.
Both were $1 yet the small things were overlooked or deemed not to be worth the trouble.  Therein to me lies the problem.  Often small things are seen not to be worth the trouble.  Yet lots of small things make big things.
