Sleep

We have had a huge couple of days, and it is not over yet.  Tomorrow I do something completely new to me and early next week I do something else which is an old task with a new concept.  I have never heard of it being done before – though I do lead a fairly sheltered life.
The last couple of days have been spent ferrying someone around close to us who needed to go to a couple of places for day surgery.  We also visited a bookstore.  Then we ate with a friend.  Then we did some shopping.
Normally I have a rest in the afternoon.  Lately I have not worried about it.  I was pretty cactus last night so I went to bed around 8pm.  I got up before 4am.  I calculated though that I had had about 7 hours sleep.  For me that is enough in the day and I was not tired when I got up.
I got to thinking about sleep.  A mate of mine has real trouble sleeping.  One time he was pulled over by the police and fell out of the car he was that tired.  Not a good look.  Some spend ages staring at the ceiling either going through the days events, or thinking about things as sleep eludes them.
I have never had that problem thankfully.  I am pretty well out to it if I want to be as soon as my head hits the pillow.  Sometimes the sleep comes on before I want it to.  I am watching something on tv and hear something I think is the same show only to find it is one on later.  The tv goes off then.  I have always been big on turning the tv off to sleep as there is stuff I do not want to watch, and if it is on while I am sleeping anything can be playing.
It always amazes me how seventh heaven was not being dictated to by an alarm but I would get up at the same time anyway.  It was always nice though getting up because I wanted to rather than had to.
I reckon sleep is really important.  Apparently when I sleep the brain processes the day’s events.  It is the time of refreshing the body.  There is a huge cost to not getting enough.  Sometimes I notice it and when I don’t the cost can be high as decisions are made which would not be made with enough sleep.
I can though have too much sleep.  I remember at work there would often be a drowsy period.  I always found it was a ruse.  I would dream of bed, but I did not really need it.  I just had to ensure I saw the time through.  As long as I did, I was right as rain and ready for the rest of the day.
When I am crook though, I do not fight sleep.  The body knows.  Healing often takes place during sleep.  When I am crook, it is a really good thing to do.
Everyone’s body clock is different.  I find I need about 7 hours.  I knew someone who thrived on four.  Others like nine or so.  Horses for courses really.  Always for me, enough is enough.
