Skits

“Observers are concerned about the number of sewing machines going into number 10 Downing Street.” “Is it curtains for Mr Heath?”  The reference to Mr Heath shows how long ago I saw it.  The sad thing really is I remember it.  It was the two Ronnies.  I also remember them doing a skit on the English weather.  They gave the temperature of each town and then combined it with England’s obsession with soccer by saying that the result of the temperatures meant particular towns went on to play each other in the semi-finals.
I remember Norman Gunston interviewing a famous English actor.  He acknowledged this guy was a famous war hero and then asked him which side he was on.  Norman was also  chewing a lolly and offered one to this guy who took it.  His face so screwed up as he told Norman that was the worst lolly he had ever had.
There was one I saw on soccer. I found it really amusing.  Due to the marvels of modern technology we could now see the 1948 English team play the 2000 English team.  And for the first time in colour!  In the skit the 1948 team was offering sandwiches all around and intent on shaking everyone’s hand.  Once the game started, in the skit the 1948 goalie could be seen chatting with one of his team players who was leaning against the goal post.  The ball went straight past the goalie for a goal.  The 1948 team were so much like little kids playing any team sport.  Rather than maintaining positions they swarmed.  The 1948 team did end up winning though by devious means.
Sort of reminded me of Monty Pythons Philosophers Football Game.  There was the usual tv introduction.  As soon as the whistle blew to start, all players wandered the field with their hands behind their backs.  Occasionally they would bring their hand out to expound a point to another.  Goals were scored more by accident than design.  The ball would get in the way of someone walking, and they kicked it unknowingly.
I did like one I saw that showed a terrorist going off because what he was saying was sub-titled.  He informed us he had been to one of the best English schools.  If anything, the person he was with needed the sub-titles.
Another of my favourites is a Dalek arriving home after a hard day’s work.  He is married and his human wife has made him a nice cup of tea.  He basically trashes the joint just because he keeps running into things. In general chit chat he tells her Mr Jones (I cannot remember names) was not feeling well but is better now.  She enquires what made the difference.  He tells her I exterminated him.  Their cat gets exterminated as does their pet bird.  Little Jonny Dalek comes out from another room.  Mum asks if he has done his homework.  He informs her he has none as he exterminated it.
It seems everyone likes to laugh.  I looked it up one time and it said something like “we tend to laugh at the absurd.”  There is no doubt in my mind what I laughed at was both absurd and relatable.
