Sever

​Sever
It seems ages ago now, but I picked a word at random in the dictionary and thought “I can do this.”  Maybe I should not have thought that as I have not done it till now.  The word my finger fell on was “sever.”
My mind goes to severing relationships before it goes to the gruesome stuff that can be on tv.  I confess I shut my eyes when something like that is about to happen.  I am most disappointed if it comes out of the blue.  There was a show on at prime time that I would not watch.  It was just too gruesome for me.  A crime thriller.
I know life dishes out gruesomeness and I will look at and deal with that, but I am not keen on having images in my mind if I do not need to.
The topic got me thinking about stitches I was to have out that came apart prematurely.  Never before have I seen my bone in my leg.  It seems the advice to rest up and not do anything strenuous is good advice.  It was not like I was trying something untried.  It was an everyday activity.  Something I do not think about.  The consequences of the lack of thought took me completely by surprise.  The doctor saw me and dealt with it straight away. 
I did not need to be told twice to be careful.  I reckon there needed to be an abundance of caution.  Fitted my motto really.  “It is not how close to danger you can go but how far you can keep from it.”  The stitches coming apart was a lesson I could have done without, but it happened.
Still, it does not matter how well I try to avoid stuff, stuff happens, and I just need to deal with it.
When it comes to relationships that need to be severed my track record is better.  I do not like to say goodbye to anyone, but sometimes for my good and theirs that is the best thing to do.  Some relationships are just bad for me.
There is nothing wrong with anyone; we are just not good for each other.  It is more than just being unwilling to have rough edges knocked off me.  It is where I end up if I continue in the relationship that does me no good.
I have had to do that a couple of times.  Like everything it was a choice.  I needed to decide where I wanted to be.  Where I wanted to be was incompatible with their company as much as I enjoyed it.
Severing relationships is often not easy, but when it is needed it is for the best.
