Selective

It is interesting to me that I received this email recently from James Clear.  In it he was talking about productivity and selectiveness.
“…Most people want to increase productivity so they can spend less time on the task.
But before you worry about being more productive, think about being more selective. Rather than focusing on increasing productivity, it may be worth asking, "What would I be delighted to spend time on, even if it went slowly?"
Direct your energy toward figuring out how to start what you want to do rather than thinking about how to shorten what you don't want to do."
I guess I have found this pretty pertinent because of late I have been thinking about what I want as opposed to what I need.  By that I mean, “is what I want something I should pursue?
I know wants can get me in trouble.  Sometimes there are things that will take my eye off the ball if I pursue and get them.  Yet I feel what is being said here encapsulates an early point in what is best for me.
It seems so easy to be involved in things that are needed - to my own detriment.  It does not mean I have no concern for stuff that needs to happen, but it is important to me I ascertain what is the thing for me to do as opposed as to the thing that needs to be done.
I know I am best pursuing things I desire to go after as opposed to doing something just because there is a need.  I operate by a mantra I have no idea where I heard that says something like, “just because it needs doing does not mean you are the one to do it.”
I appreciate that “the buck stops here” for someone in charge of an organization.  In other words, someone who runs an organization is responsible to ensure all that needs to happen happens.
But for me as part of an organization this is where wants come in.  I know I am much better going after things that are in my heart to do.  This often involves wants as opposed to needs.
In fact, what I need is really quite minimal.  Food, shelter, security, to love and be loved and a sense of purpose.  Once these needs are met it is really wants I will go after.  Not unreasonable or “pie in the sky” wants, but the things I enjoy doing, and are important to do.  Things I am good at that contribute to myself and others.
I know I should go after things, yet it is important I go after the right things.
