Second Wind

I have run, but I am no runner.  I do have memories of a close finish.  Not for first mind you.  I have no idea what was happening up there.  But a close finish with someone I did want to beat.  Not that it means anything, but I think I did win that one.  It is probably memorable because it was unusual.
Though I do hold a number of running world records but none of them are recognized.  Running from here to over there does not cut it.  Running from something scary does not rate a mention.  Unless I mention it.  All of them were personal bests.
I ran to switch on a light one time as I heard something strange in the room.  Turned out it was a cat.  But in the darkness I did not know that.  For all I knew it was a four headed sharp toothed never before encountered creature.  It was at that time I learned that “my heart was in my mouth” was not just a saying.  I experienced something whereby it really seemed my heart had jumped into my mouth.
I do remember going for a run one time and really being glad I did.  I felt so much better for it and my head was way clearer.  But then another guy turned up and when I told him what I had done he did it.  For him it was like an entrée but for me it had been a main course.  It was a big deal.
One thing that is described in distance running that I have experienced is getting my second wind.  I reach a point where I am ready to give it away.  I am convinced it is the right thing to be doing, but it all seems too hard.
One theory in distance running is that the second wind relates to the body finding the right balance of oxygen to counteract the build up of lactic acid.  I don’t know about such things, but I do know I had what I needed to go on with renewed energy.
I do really like that.  It seems that can be applied to many things I have gone through.  Often I know I am doing the right thing and have been doing it for ages.  It can seem it becomes all too much.  The inspiration that got me going in the first place seems like a distant memory.
I put one foot in front of the other but the only thing that keeps me going is the conviction it was right in the first place, and the reward of finishing the race.  But I’m in trouble.  Unless something happens that’s it for me.
I have a theory about peace.  There are two types.  The peace that comes with giving up and the one that comes with winning.  But I have never found giving up to be a good option.
This growing older is a downer though.  One thing about pinnacles is there is always the other side.  But thankfully pinnacles may not again be as high, but they are there.
What I am pleased about is that often when things are at there worst and I feel I cannot go on, I get my second wind.  It is like the fog parts and I can see clearly again.  Pressing on to my goal is what I want to do.  What was right before was always right despite how I felt.
The finish line is the goal again, and getting my second wind was worth the wait.
