Scientific Experiment

30/4/2019

Ok I have been at it again.  I can’t help myself.  Actually, I can but I choose not to.  It is probably best if I call it a scientific experiment.  Maybe I can put it under the title of “The Feeding Habit of Crows.”   It must be a boy thing.  The girls go “the poor crow, “how terrible” while the boys go, “do it again, do it again.”
We occasionally feed crows an egg.  Merril does that, and more often than not the crows are waiting in the tree for her.  If she is tardy in attending to their needs, they sit on the back of a chair and make a huge racket.  If she is sitting outside and has not done anything they do fly pasts.  No “out of sight, out of mind,” with them.  They make sure they can be seen.
I sometimes put the egg in the back yard for them.  I must admit though when I do it, it is never straight forward.  Twice I have given them a frozen egg.  They are sort of used to that now, and have determined the best way to deal with it.  Last time a crow took the whole egg in its mouth and flew off somewhere.  I have no idea what happened.
This time I took it a step further.  We had bagged ice we wanted to get rid of.  Therefore, I not only froze the egg, I surrounded it with ice.  I wanted to see what the crows would do.  I was not disappointed with their antics.  I mean, the case study showed unexpected results.
I can write down, “crows do not like to step on ice in a sub-tropical environment.  When they do, they fly backwards and land and look down.”
I should also note, “crows are incredibly patient.”  They could see the egg, they wanted the egg, but they were not going to walk over ice to get it.  They liked to go to the edge of the ice and lean.  However, in this case, leaning still left them a long way short of their goal.
This will not be included in the study, but I did wonder if one crow had a biblical background.  At least six times he marched around the ice pile not making a sound.  I did question the value of that, as unlike the walls of Jericho, the ice pile was very much already at ground level.
This was where the patience came in.  Although, I will need to do further research I think.  I cannot be sure if it was patience, or just giving up.  I do know though, that whatever the reason, they were very hungry and after initially backing away, they claimed the bird food bowl the Lorikeets were at.
I could see from my seat the ice was melting.  When I started, I could not see the egg for the ice.  It was not too long though before the egg was as plain as day.  Eventually the ice was gone as was the egg.
I did not see that though, as I had somewhere to be.
