School Fete

8/9/2018

School fetes are generally not on the “to do” list of either Merril or myself.  However we did find ourselves at one today.
It was not like, we had marked the date and said, that is where we are going to be.  It is just that we live near a school, and heard the loud speaker going. That was enough to remind us that this was the date of the school fete.  As the school is not far away, it was a good chance for a walk, we went there.
It was really pleasing to see a large number of cars parked there, with more arriving all the time.  For us it was a brief walk down the street, and across the park, and we were there.
At first, we could hear it, but wondered where it was.  Although we were on the grounds, every path we took led us to nothing.  We then saw someone emerge from someplace and went there, and there it was.
There was an impressive number of stalls.  The first we came across was like a trash and treasure.  We did not buy anything, but there were lots of toys, pictures and other things for sale, at ridiculously low prices.
One thing that was really impressive to see, was the “done up” cars on display.  A club must have been invited, as the doer uppers were there, along with their immaculate handiwork.  I did look for Fords, but there were mostly Holdens and other vehicles.
There were the usual stalls selling fruit and vegies.  The prices were basically the same as in the supermarket.  I was looking for avocadoes, but decided I may as well get them with the regular shopping, at the price they were asking.  They had an ATM, and a few food courts. It was good to see a place set up with chairs just to sit.  The police were there, as were the SES.  Both were there to show what they do, but having them there was reassuring, in case of emergency.  There were other stalls selling this and that. Merril noticed two Tupperware stalls.  I had only noticed one.
It was great to see people everywhere.  The most popular with the kids were definitely the rides.  There was a large line of kids with parents, waiting to get into that area.
It was good for them that the weather held off.  Here we were, wanting it to rain rain, rain, and I am sure they would have not wanted it to rain, rain, rain.  At least not for that event.  Planning an outdoor event is incredible fickle.  The date is set months on advance, but it is unknown what the weather will be like on the day.
We did not spend long there.  We did the rounds and then walked home.  On a few criteria, I reckon it would have been a success.  Everyone there appeared to be having a good time anyway.
