Scars

Like most people, I am into music.  I had a big record collection and now have a large digital collection.  Merril has one to, and we like each other’s music.
Merril and I recently subscribed to Spotify Premium Family.  We can both access the music of anyone.  It means we can really sample before we buy.
There was a guy I was really keen on in the past called Russ Taff.  I read about his life today and he has been incredibly successful, but battled alcoholism.  He was with the Imperials and Bill Gaither and had a solo career.  I loved what I had heard of his music.
A song on “Winds of Change” says something I really love.  It says “If I didn’t already love you, I’d fall in love tonight.”  To me that is so right on so many levels.
I actually thought he had had a stroke but it seems I was wrong.  I saw today he has produced his first album since 2011.  I read his life story.  Apparently, the alcoholism was a problem to his dad, which he inherited.  It did not help that he was told so often that he was not good enough.  In the midst of incredible success, he would relapse every 10 year or so.  He has past that now, and a movie has been made about it.  How he got past it is a story in itself.
What has impressed me though is there is a song on his latest album called “Don’t try so hard.”  It contains words I find very encouraging.  “Your lovely even with your scars, don’t try so hard.”
Scars to me are evidence of a lived life.  Flawless people have often been cocooned.   Unless one makes ones livings from looks then for most of us, scars are just evidence of a past.  Surprisingly, I have never had that problem.  Cooper Cronk the footballer is a good looking fella, but his nose tells me his occupation has been hazardous.  Cameron Smith though makes me sick.  How can you stay that good looking playing football?
I heard the other day a link between Peter and “flat nose.”  I thought, that part is right.  Merril has some sunnies.  One bit that goes over the ear broke off.  That was ok as they could still do the job.  The other day the other side broke off.  The amazing thing is they can still balance.  Me, I put them on, and they slide straight off.  Merril has since got another pair.
It is a fact of life.  We look on the outside.  Especially men.  I can look at some couples and one is incredibly good looking or handsome and the other is, to put it politely, plain.  I can wonder, what does that person see in that person?  I think it is because I am looking on the outside.  Sometimes hidden treasure is contained in very plain packaging.
They reckon what you see is what you get.  I just need to see.  Sometimes what does not inspire a second look is inspirational.  Knowing that though, may take time.
There is probably treasure everywhere.  I just need to take the time to look.
