Running with it

It is weird but for a while now I have been big on ownership.  I feel that for something to be achieved, then the person with the idea or who embraces the idea, needs to be involved to the point that they make it theirs.
I do remember how in one group I was head of, people would come to me with what I considered great ideas.  But I made a point of not taking them on.  I felt if someone felt strongly about something, and I had given my approval, it was up to them to make it happen.  I would do all I could to help as needed, but I would not do it for them.
Sometimes the idea was run with and from what I saw good things happened.  At other times ideas remained ideas only and nothing happened.  When that happened I would invariably be disappointed but I would not step in and make it happen.
That is the recipe for burn out.  To me burn out can occur even if something is embraced and run with, but it is more likely to occur if someone does something only because then need to rather than want to.
But to me that is less likely to happen (not to say it cannot happen because it can and does) when someone owns something.  They have a vested interest in the process and the outcome.
I remember talking with someone who was talking about making something free.  I was opposed to the idea based on the fact there would be no ownership.  It seems people are more likely to stick with something when they own it.
Ownership to me is based on a desire to see something happen.  I really believe that someone is more likely to let something go if it is unimportant to them.  I see it all the time on tv.  People fight for what is theirs.  The sense of ownership and desire determines actions.  Choices tend to be made that reinforce the desire while things deemed to not matter fall by the wayside.
This is especially true where there is passion for what is being attempted and achieved.  I find this big time.  When I have a passion for something I am consumed by it and will continuously work to make it happen.  Pretty quicky I realize what is outside the scope of what I am wanting to be achieved.  My passion helps me forgo what is unhelpful.
They say do not come between a bear and its cubs.  This is true for things that are important to me.
