Running of the Taps

1/8/2018

Big day today. On the 7th of July every year, both Merril and I traditionally are a part of the annual “Running of the Taps.” I would have completely overlooked it if I had been able to sleep. I really thought that sleeping for me would not be a problem, after having such a busy day. A good bit of it was spent staring meaningfully into the middle distance, and I was exhausted.
Anyway I could not sleep, and it is probably just as well, or I would have completely overlooked the significance of the day.
What today meant came soon after I had been thinking about Merrils walk. I was thinking, that we could hold an annual walking event that involved walking to say five shops and getting something. I think it could be really popular, particularly if we linked it to a worthy cause like giving money to us. The preferred method of giving would be by direct deposit, but I reckon we would accept cash too. Personally I think it would be a goer, if it could only be made to make any sense at all.
Soon after thinking about this stuff, I realised what today was. Both Merril and I have attended all our lives. As babies we were carried to it, and neither of us have ever missed it. We did not realise the other one was there, but they were. In fact we both remember where we lived when we celebrated our 50 years of involvement. I was living in Burpengary at the time, and Merril lived in Mitchelton.
As I say it is an annual event. It all started at a little place called “Dondeyovivo.” It is a Spanish word. I have done some research into it, and found a literal English translation means something like “where I live.” The beauty of it is, it is now celebrated worldwide. I am sure though the town of Dondeyovito would like it only there, to attract more of the tourist dollars. Still, some go there just to see where it started, and to feel more a part of it. Ok, so not all the world has embraced this event, but most has, and it is just a matter of time I reckon before more will.
Every year we are both involved, and this year will be no exception. Whether we are having a shower, or putting the washing machine on, or making a coffee, we both feel we are again a part of the annual Running of the Taps
