Run Away

I just read something I like.  It was said by Rollo May “It is an old and ironic habit of human beings to run faster when we have lost our way.”
There are so many things I can hitch my wagon to.  I think of all the isms.  Communism, Confucianism, Humanism, Materialism, Asceticism.  To me most have a good element.  Something that is worth holding on to.  The care of the individual seems a good thing about communism.
The stock market is in free fall at the moment, but it rallied recently based on someone overtaking Bernie Sanders as the Democratic front runner.  The perceived problem with him?  His war against big business.  He was seen to be too left wing, though in the US left wing is a slight variation on right wing (to me the Democrats have a real dilemma.  Bernie is seen as old while Biden is seen as vulnerable with his health.)
Confucius said “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.”  I reckon that is gold.  I need to do something to really get a hold of it.  Humanism makes me appreciate my freedom.  A measure of Materialism is necessary for me to have something to give and to know a measure of security.  Asceticism helps me to do without and determine what is really necessary (I did not include Atheism there as I reckon it is a word for “burying my head in the sand”).
All good stuff.  The trouble for me is, when I sit down to a meal, I don’t want just a bit of it to be good, I want to know it is all good for me.  If it is, I will eat it with gusto instead of picking at my food.
For me, running is as much about what I am running to as what I am running away from.  There seems to be a lot of running away in movies.  Understandable really.  Fight or flight.
I am not thinking of the Knights of Ni encouraging others to “run away, run away” from the ravenous rabbits. I am thinking more of the “War of the World’s” movie with Tom Cruise which I found really disturbing.  There was a lot of running away in that.  For many it was to no avail.  To the hero’s it was not though.  That movie was so unusual in that humanity did not get the invaders, disease did.  Normally movies are more like “Independence Day” where humanity wins the day.
The thing for me though is much running away is more a matter of self-preservation rather than self-fulfilment.  I prefer to adhere to something that self-preserves and fulfils in the long term.
