Rose

Dictionary day again.  Sometimes I pick a word at random and at other times I give it to Merril and she picks the word.  That is the way I did it this time.  The word her hand fell on was “Rose.”
It really is no wonder English is considered a hard language to learn as that word has a couple of meanings but is spelt the same.  My mind went immediately to the rose bush.  But it could be like “the cake rose” or the Easter celebration where Jesus rose from the dead.  Either way the word is spelt the same, though it has two very different meanings.
The only roses we have here are dwarf ones.  I really like them and had them in my previous place.  It is finding a place with enough light that is the issue here.  I think I have these ones fairly well placed.  To have more I think I would need a garden on wheels to chase the light.
Unless of course I put them in the front yard.  But I am avoiding that.  That area gets the most light, but I am endeavouring to put plants in there that require a minimum of water.
Out the back basically gets afternoon sun except in one place.  We did have a rose out the front and it went mad and we had to shoot it.  No, we had to pull it out.  It was supposed to be “contained” but nobody told it.  Shoot is another word spelt the same with a couple of meanings.
I did sticky tape a white plastic rose on what we knew to be a red rose one time.  I knew that would attract attention and I was not disappointed.
We did have some out the back but they did not do well.  We had less and less roses.  One thing that is really clear is that plants that need light and do not get enough are prone to diseases.  Roses are notorious anyway, but these ones were up against it no matter what we did.
Dad loved roses and established a rose garden.  He won first prize for one one time.  The prize was a bag of manure.  One fellow suggested second prize might be two bags of manure.  The neighbour was into roses to, but decided they were more effort than was worth the reward.
The thing about roses is they will get you.  It did not matter how careful I was in wearing gloves and exercising caution, I would get scratched by thorns.  I knew to exercise extreme care around them, but I would always have something to show for tending them.
So the dwarf roses are the only ones here right now.  They are pretty and bloom for ages.  It seems it is important to know what plants suite the environment.  We did get someone in who told us what plants should go where.  It was good advice.  I think it was anyway as we still need to do it.
