Risk

Biology is not destiny.  I just read that.  In New Scientist.  Most of what I read there is way over my head but this article I found interesting.
It was all about risk and it got me thinking.  Risk involves uncertainty.  Getting up of a morning involves risk.  It may be managed and based on what has gone before there is a high degree of probability that it will go the way it has.  But I just do not know.
I will never forget the start of the movie “American Beauty” where the guy said you do not wake up expecting this day to be your last.  To me that is so true.  I did not wake up expecting it to be Stu’s last day a few weeks ago.  When I went to work, I did not wake up expecting it to be my last day there.
To me it is right and proper to try to control my environment.  I do all I can to do so.  In fact, I may be over cautious.  But it is very clear to me that no matter what I do to ensure all is as it reasonably can be, the unexpected happens.
Rather than be a downer though, it is one of the things I find exciting about life.  I put myself in a position to make things happen but that does not guarantee all will happen.  But it is probably as someone says “the more I plan, the luckier I am.”
As they say, “fail to plan and you plan to fail,” rings true for me.  I am a great believer in if I really want something I should prepare as though I have it already.  I may not, but that makes no difference to me.  I guess that comes from something I heard long ago.  “Available people prepare.”
It is really what I was talking about a couple of articles ago.  To me, what someone is is obvious.  They may not have the title but the have the role.  It may not be in an official capacity, but it is by their nature.  It is something they do, not because they have to, but because they want to.
A dream involves risks.  The possibility something may go wrong.  Sometimes dreams are right out there and are high risk.   The higher the risk the greater the reward.
In some matters I am averse to taking risks.  I am a steady as she goes type.  Yet in other things I am right out there.  I know I go out on a limb, but it is never in blind hope but with a confidence that though no one may have done it, it does not mean it cannot be done.
I guess that is the only way to break new ground.  The best inventions are those that meet a need in a better way.
There is no doubt in my mind I will take risks.  But I don’t think it is ever in an irresponsible way.  Mostly I have, as best as possible, thought it through.  I may look like an idiot, but just you wait and see.
