As usual the email from James Clear did not disappoint and contained what I agree is a great question.
“A wonderful question from Morgan Housel on measuring your results internally rather than externally:  "Would I be happy with this result if no one other than me and my family could see it, and I didn't compare the result to the appearance of other people's success?"
That to me is a biggy.  There are all kinds of results, but it seems to me a question like this applies in any circumstance.
For some being seen is important and the more that know of a job well done the better.  Yet for others recognition from most is not important.  What matters in such circumstances is a personal sense of satisfaction.
To me this matters in all circumstances – be they big or small.  Maybe the results affect many or maybe they affect few.  It is not the number of people affected that determines my motivation.
It is about the quality of the job.  It is easy to tell when something is done just to dupe another into satisfaction gained until the facts are known and minimal effort has been gone into.  Things look good until they are investigated.
This sort of thing happened to me in a house I bought.  All looked good until a particular wall was looked it.  It was made of a paper product painted the same colour as the room.  There was work to be done.
On the other hand others will go what is considered the extra mile.  The job is done and done well.  Expectations are exceeded.
Really the quality of my work is up to me.  The results can be wonderful or abysmal.  I need to live with the consequences.  Motivations are a personal matter revealed in doing.  The way I treat a person or situation tells a lot about me.  Am I motivated only as it affects my skin or am I motivated by care of a person or situation?
As in all things it is my choice.  Even though the whole gamut of personalities faces the same choice, matters of the heart prevail and what I achieve reflects who I am.
