I am into inspirational stuff at the moment.  I am reading a number of speeches and I have got heaps out of a lot, but stuff Winston Churchill said I’m finding really good.
I am reading a speech by a guy called Jack Kemp who was talking about Churchill.  He was sighting how Churchill was so much against appeasement.  He had seen Hitler walk into a number of countries because no one did anything.  Speaking of history to his cabinet he said, “Nations which went down fighting rose again, but those which surrender tamely are finished.”.
I like that, but it is what I read next that blew me away. “Churchill turned uncertainty into resolve, apprehension into determination, fear into hope-and, with it, a near defeat into an eventual triumph.”
I said recently how sometimes I feel like a broken record.  I actually do not mind.  If I was spewing negativity, doubt and fear then I would not want anything to do with me.  But I’m not.  I promote hope.  These things build me up.  They make me want to face things rather than cower.  Questions do not concern me.  Platitudes and answers which are not really answers do.
I hope I am first and foremost a realist.  I guess it is calling a spade a spade.  Personally, I have no time for burying my head in the sand and imagining something does not exist.  It does, and a lot of it is not very nice.  But that does not mean I think how it is, is the way it will always be.  If I thought that, I may as well throw up my hands in defeat now.  But it seems hope is in-born.  I think it is why after floods, and fires and planes bringing down buildings, the next day an army of people clean up and start again.
It is why faith is not such a big deal for me.  We exercise it every day in a multitude of decisions.  It is built on probability.  Things can go wrong, but overwhelmingly they don’t.  Some things I not only shut the door on, but I dead-lock it and board it up.  But as a person I will always try to be open.  I don’t want to spruik “evidence”, without considering there may be a legitimate alternative.
I guess it is a bit like a lawyer does.  Which-ever side they are defending, they choose evidence that supports their case.  They choose to ignore and sometimes belittle anything to the contrary, with a single-minded determination to prove their case convincing.  I remember hearing someone say that it was a pity the case was not determined by the truth, but by the quality of the lawyer.
I love that Churchill could “turn uncertainly into resolve, apprehension into determination, fear into hope-and, with it, a near defeat into an eventual triumph.”  A win is a win.  Sometimes the final result is in the balance until the very end, but I will take a win every time.
