Resolution

I reckon I must only subscribe to some things so I can do a group delete every so often.  An email did have a heading that caught my eye today.  It said, “The Lazy Person’s Guide to Self-Improvement.”

I could relate to that.  What they were promoting I wanted.  The less effort the better.  I must say I was disappointed though.  To improve still involved work.  There was no quick fix.  Even a scheme that said if I parted with a gazillion dollars and would not need to do anything, and be guaranteed of success, I would look at.

That sort of thing is probably out there.  It is no wonder it is said “a fool and his money are soon parted.”  Those sort of things are often an aid but not a solution.  There is no substitute for effort.  Believe me I have looked.

I feel for people that see an ad for the latest diet program.  Someone must make some money.  It does not seem to matter if we “fire our guns” they still “keep a coming...”  To me (and I can be wrong – that time in 1973 proved that) it does not matter what a person does, there has to be a will to succeed for it to succeed.  I am thinking of diet programs at the moment, but it is true for anything really.

It cannot just be a momentary will, which at the first sign of opposition or difficult circumstances gives up and proclaims, “well it seemed like a good idea at the time.”  I think I could promote “the Kuskie Diet” (the Kuskie diet by the way, is to eat what I eat when I eat it) and it could be a success.  It would be successful for those who pursued success no matter what.

That is not to make light of things that can bind a person.  It is really hard.  I should not give up trying if I feel it is something to deal with now.  If I need help so be it.  Whatever it takes I reckon.

They reckon that the brain forms pathways.  The first time something is done a new pathway is formed.  It is only when it is done regularly that the pathway is deep enough to be considered a habit.  Just like I have formed bad habits, I have formed good ones too.

Bit like a water course really.  I have noticed in this yard water always finds the point to travel along.  If I allow it to follow that course often enough, it forms a gouge and becomes a water course.  It is a bit of a stretch, but I think of my brain like that.  When I want something enough I do it often enough, and that eventually becomes the course my actions automatically follow.

It is almost the new year.  That is traditionally the time for resolutions.  I am all for resolutions and now is as good a time as any.  I have only one this year.  It is “My resolution is that I will have no resolutions.”  From past experience I would be only setting myself up for a fall and beating myself up

As I say, for me it really does not matter if it Jan 1, Jul 12 or Nov 16, whatever I resolve, I need to mean it, and be willing to follow through come what may. That can be a process.  Heading in the right direction is what matters to me.

I do have a resolution for you though.  I do not know that resolution is the right word.  I want the best for you.  Always will.
