It is not like me but I will admit it.  I expected the worst.  So often it seems what is expected happens.  I have seen it and was blown away.  I saw someone who expected the worst and they got it in the situation we were in.  It was not life and death, but the worst happened.
It was Merril’s turn to pick a word at random from the dictionary.  I expected some obscure word I had never heard of, and I would have to do heaps of study on it if I was at least to sound like I knew what I talking about.
I thought the word might have some spelling I would need to go back to continually to ensure it was spelt right.  But that was not the case.  Merril asked did I want the word from the front or the back, and we agreed that whatever way she went was ok.  Turned out well.  Doesn’t always, but this time it did.   Merril picked the word and looked at me and said it was a common word, “rely.”
It made me think of how much I rely on.  I have a coffee first thing.  I rely on the kettle to start.  The other day for the first time ever it started but would not stop.  It just kept boiling. I turned it off, but it was hot to handle.  But it takes more than that to keep me from my coffee.
I do rely on the car starting when we need to go anywhere.  Changing tyres or getting the RACQ out is a downer.  Not to mention the effect it has on appointment times.  It is normally around then I find I need a new battery.  Fancy the battery not lasting forever.  For me the car is one of those things I rely on to thrive on neglect.  Not a good look really but fortunately I have a mechanic that I think does the right thing by me.  Some places tell a person they need to spend thousands.  He tells me what I need to do for the next service and what may be down the track.
Looking around the house it is amazing to me how much I rely on.  We do preventative maintenance so we can continue to rely on things doing their job.  We do that for the gutters.  We clean up the house.  I even rely on the door opening when I want it to.  We had a door that opened even if it was locked.  We relied on that.  It has decided after many years it will not now, so we rely on our key to open another door.  We keep a spare set of keys in a secret location.  I could tell you where but then I would have to kill you and that is not a good look for either of us.  I suppose it depends where a person is going.  I would be just helping someone to get there quicker.
People though are a different kettle of fish.  I just need to look at me.  I rely on people but sometimes I am let down just like I sometimes let people down.  It is a fact of life.  I have only found one person to be totally reliable.  To me unreliability is not a show-stopper.  It is a reality check.
I rely on so much.  Merril just mentioned how we rely on gravity to keep us on the ground.  Hadn’t thought of that.  One thing for sure though, for so much I rely on reliability.
