Regurgitate

Dictionary day.  Have I done this word before?  Regurgitate.  I don’t think so.  I find it interesting that its history traces back to the 16th century and is from the Latin word for whirlpool, “gurges.”
I know that doing tests I was required to regurgitate knowledge that had been past on from a teacher.  I see the birds feed their young by regurgitating only partially digested food.  It is great how parents eat food for their young to have.
To me regurgitating can be a useful tool.  I see those who do not do it at a loss when the methodology for doing something is unavailable.
It also can be a dangerous tool.  More than once I see peoples regurgitate something unchecked but chosen to be believed.  Generally, the consequences are dire for target groups.
Personally, I do not believe it is enough for me to quote what I consider a trusted source.  Generally, I find that most things said are verifiable, but as far as I am concerned it is not enough to believe something just because “they” said it.  Even the most well-meaning person can get something wrong.
For writing this blog, I check what I say before I write it.  I am not interested in quoting something just because it may fit into my world view.  I am interested in quoting something because it is true and I have, where possible, verified it for myself.
To me one of the most dangerous things to do is quote something as true just because it is popular or convenient at the time.  To me saying something often enough does not make it true.  A lie starts as such never becomes anything else.
I am happy to regurgitate truisms.  I am not happy to regurgitate something popular but unproven and that flies in the face of what has been proven.  To me regurgitating can be both healthy and unhealthy.
