Recycling

What’s the saying “what’s old is new again”
We see so much of it these days.  I am fond of the term “enlightened self-interest.”  It seems to me, the recycling craze is popular now for two reasons.  It is right, but it seems the thing that makes it a goer, is that money can now be made out of it.
There are now waste recycling plants to produce energy.  Plastic is being removed from the system.  Batteries are replacing petrol.  I heard about an Australian that produced a really efficient car engine.  The petrol companies bought it and shelved it.  Why?  They would have lost money big time.
It seems companies need to adapt or potentially die.  We saw it with type writers.  Film is now mostly a thing of the past.  I personally don’t want companies to fail, but I also don’t like them succeeding only at my expense.  I think there will always be a niche market for things.  Records are a case in point.  So is printing.  So is dvd hiring.
Some companies will only go down kicking and screaming.  To me, no company has a “right” to exist.  They need to have a reason for being, adapt, and acknowledge there are others who want to muscle in on that market.
Where I worked we had a collection agency who collected, counted and banked our cash.  I will never forget what one of the founders said to me.  He said something like, “we are like the sea gulls around the boats.  We are not a Chubb or Armor Gard but we get enough.”  Boy did they get enough.  I have never seen such security, or so many camera’s as I did in their establishment.  Where I worked no longer handles cash at all.
Once upon a time many things were made to be thrown out.  Built in redundancy Barbara referred to it as.  Just get a new one, and throw out the old.  It was like resources were infinite.   They were not.
Now days it is as it was before.  Carefully recycle everything so it can have another life.  We do it with our stuff at home.  We are not hard and fast about it, but we are getting there, and heading in the right direction.
To me recycling is a good thing.  It is a pity we had to waste so much and do so much harm to learn.
