Recessional Hymn

It is Merril’s turn to choose a word from the dictionary, and she has.  But she is not here, and it was a really obscure word I do not remember, so I will wait for her to see if she knows. (She actually chose it about a month ago and we have been on holidays and away from the source.)
So I chose a word at random.  I shut my eyes and turned the dictionary this way and that and put my finger on a page to see what word it was at.  The dictionary was upside down but the word my finger was on was “recessional hymn.”  (I know that is two words and it threw mw initially, but after a lot of hieroglyphics I saw that both Recessional and Hymn were in bold print.)
I never knew such a thing existed.  It must belong to a tradition that is foreign to me.  The definition is “hymn sung while clergy and choir withdraw after the service.”  I will take their word on that one.  Though I did look at Wikipedia which seems to know everything, and it is used in the Catholic and Anglican churches.
We tend to watch, listen to and sing along to a video at the end.  After that we split.  Some go straight home, and others hang around for a cuppa and a chat.  At mix and mingle time one person’s role could not be determined by looking at someone.
We do not sing many hymns in our services, but we do occasionally, and I love them.  I am gravitating a bit to listen to them of late.  A number of artists sing traditional hymns accompanied by modern instruments.  I find the words really meaty.
That is just the way we do it.  I do not feel there is a right and wrong way when it comes to such things.  What matters to me is someone feels comfortable, and people feel at home.
Home to me matters a lot.  I know when we go away it is nice to come home.  To sleep in my own bed.  To go to the fridge and have a fair idea what is in it and where. I am comfortable there.  It is what I have chosen.
As in all homes I am familiar with there are some “must have’s” like running water and electricity.  But once the basics are met there are many variations on a theme.  I remember being with someone and we saw something in a yard and the person said, “I don’t like that.”  I was thinking how much I liked it.
That brought home to me that when it comes to home, and some basics are met, there is no right or wrong way to do something, but personal preference.  When I see what is done on shows like The Block or home renovation shows, I can dream but it is not like a “must have.”  Maybe a particular way of having something done would be desirable but when it comes down to it, I need something with function that works, and the form can vary.
We do not have a structured recessional hymn format but what matters to me is that as long as basics are met, I am comfortable and feel at home.
