Reason for the WOrld

Merril and I like to watch a show called Hard Quiz. I do not think I have ever seen a compare more inclusive. He has had a blind contestant and others disabled in some way. He says things to everyone that make us squirm, but he seems to have a compassionate heart.
Why I mention that show is he says something that reminded me of something I said to myself. After everyone has (four contestants) been asked questions on their special subject he says something like “we’ve asked them about their special subject, now let’s ask them about mine!”
I was reminded of that because, although I could not really call it my special subject, I love finding a singer/songwriter whose music and words I really enjoy. What has made his music special to me is that after he became successful, he had to have an operation that would affect his vocal chords. It was totally unknown if he would ever sing again.
It all turned out well, but to me he comes from a place of experience and not only theory. I reckon I would like his music anyway, but for me the words are an added bonus. He has a real way with them.
Anyway music is really subjective and he is one artist I like a lot.
This morning I was listening to a song of his called “The Reason for the World.” It is a big subject, but he offers a very simple reason. Maybe the reason for the world is to make us long for home.
I love life. I love my wife, family, friends, what I do and what I am involved in. There are a tremendous amount of positives. Yet I would be being less than honest if I did not acknowledge there is a part of me that longs for home. That will experience a sense of relief when the book of this life is finished and closed. It seems a part of what makes so many experiences enjoyable is knowing there is a sanctuary to come home to.
Why do bad things happen to good people? Why did my neighbour’s daughter suddenly get leukemia? Why did a mentor of mine get killed by a brain tumour or another friend die from a melanoma? Why do thousands suffer because of the actions of one person? As he says in another song, “you did not ask for this, nobody ever would.”
Questions to me are not to be feared but embraced. I am not into glib responses or parroted answers. Grieving is healthy. Anger is understandable. Feelings of helplessness are the domain of everyone.
All I know is that I have an unclear view of things. Things may be unfocused to me but that does not mean they are unfocused. The bottom line for me is that from my experience the one I trust is trustworthy. Things happen that do not make sense to me, but thankfully that does not mean they do not make sense.
The big picture is not mine to draw. My role is to draw a little picture in the corner. I came into this world alone and will leave it the same way. Not understanding is not a reason for inaction. I just want others to be better for the experience of having me around.
