Rainy Day

10/12/2019

I have heard it said “consider the ant,” but I have never heard it said “consider the crow.” But that is what I am doing.  I have said a few times how we have a family of crows visit.  Ok admittedly we bribe them with food to come, but they are very obliging.
Something we have seen is a crow hiding food for later.  Sometimes it is just a leaf over the food (so not impressive, as the first breeze blows the leaf off the food.)  At other times a crow finds a good spot to put food.  There are no doubt other animals that do far more, but what impresses me about this activity is the crow saving something for a rainy day.
I like that.  I think I can learn something if it gets through this skull.  I live in an instant society.  I want it and I want it now.  I am though not really into that.  I am more a “do it and get if I need it” person rather than a “get it because I might do it” person.  As long as I have food, shelter and security everything else is a bonus.
Food I will always need.  I would like that I could eat everything on a Sunday, and not need to eat again till the next Sunday.  But it does not work like that.  I need food.  It is one of the reasons I am a believer in Australia producing what we need, rather than getting it offshore.  I don’t want relations with my supplier to turn sour and be without essentials.
Shelter seems to be tied up with the great Australian dream.  Owning a bit of land with the house.  Freedom to do what I want with my place.  Until then I rent.  I can do stuff but it is not the same.  I have just realized that I have now owned a home longer than I rented.  Tell you what though, there is always something to do.  Dreams are a great maybe, while washing the cloths is now.
I enjoy a measure of security.  Though there will always be people that will take my stuff and not think twice about it.  It is why at our place we lock doors and have security on the windows.  As someone said though, those things will keep the honest people out.  Some estates are like fort Knox and they are still breached.  I know someone who has had their house robbed four times.  Each time the security has been increased.  The last time the place was robbed, the thieves gained access through attacking the door opposite to where the locks and dead bolts were.
Having food, shelter and security is good for now, and like the crow I have made provision for a rainy day.  I cannot pretend though, that any of those could not disappear in an instant.  Food is becoming seedless and I cannot grow my own.  The bushfires have shown me what can happen to my shelter.  My place flooding also showed me that.  I enjoy security but it seems to be getting harder to find.  Now there are bollards to stop cars in pedestrian areas.  People with guns are at some airports.  Many nations arm to avoid someone stronger conquering them.
I will do what I’ve got to do, but I am thinking that for me to rely on them is to rely on something unreliable.
