Seems like ages ago now that we went to Melbourne and other places around it.  It involved planning and dreaming.  All worked out well despite us feeling like we were very much country bumkins.  Never was that felt more then when I told a driver their rear-view mirror was pressed in.  He politely thanked me and as he drove away deployed it remotely.  I never even knew cars did that.
Still, it was an adventure, and I am up for them.  When we had our shed built that was an adventure.  We never knew how it was going to turn out.  We had pictures in our minds but that was expectation rather than knowing.  We both laugh at how when we had grass delivered Merril was on it when something happened and she ran away – down the worst place she could have run.  Not deliberately, she made maximum impact of the worst kind.
I was looking up the meaning of “adventure.”  I was surprised that every meaning I read included the words risk or danger. “An unusual, exciting, and possibly dangerous activity.” (Cambridge English) “An undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks.” (Merriam-Webster)
The great thing to me is that as Robert Kurson said, “It is never too late in life to have a genuine adventure.”  So many seem to think that adventure is for the young.  I reckon it is for the young at heart.
There is no doubt risk involved, but I reckon there is risk going to the shops (actually there is a lot of risk if I go with my wife.  Examining the contents of every shelf I could die in there).
“There and Back Again” outlined the adventures of Bilbo Baggins.  He finished the book and then embarked on another adventure.
I will not take what I consider are unnecessary risks, but I’d rather go out during an adventure than living a life of mediocracy.  No wonder they say someone died and 30 years later they were buried.  Not all adventures end well but it is as Ernie Harwell said, “it's time to say goodbye, but I think goodbyes are sad and I'd much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure.”
It seems all adventures involve the unfamiliar.  The early explorers did not know what was over the next horizon.  I do not know what is over the next horizon, but I am still keen to scramble up the slope to get a look.  So often it is more of the same, but sometimes it is something different.  Maybe something expected or maybe something unexpected.  Either way it is new.  Some place I’ve never been before.  Something that may change everything for me.
As I get older my world shrinks, but there always remains adventures to be had.  It may involve turning the page of a book or visiting new places or making a decision that changes my destiny.
Whatever happens, when adventure I would like to be involved in calls, I want to answer in the affirmative.
