Pulling Down

18/1/2021

I have been asking myself a question.  I actually ask myself a lot of questions.  Like “what’s to eat?” and “what’s on tv?”  I have been asking myself, “does pulling someone down ever achieve anything?”
I do think there are some negatives that achieve something.  I remember saying to a guy in Townsville, “war never achieves anything.”  He pointed out that at the very least it relieves tension.  I reckon he was right.  The celebrations that were unleashed when there was victory in the pacific, and the second world war ended, pointed to that.
When it comes to pulling down an individual though I do wonder.  To me that sort of thing implies superiority.  I may or may not have it more together than another, but that to me never implies I have a right to bag another.  I may have grown, but what starts as a gift, remains a gift.
It seems some pulling down is born of legitimate care.  I want the best for another but by their behaviour it is obvious they are falling short.  To me, there is a way to encourage the best in another, but pulling down is not it.  I have never known someone to change for the better as a result of words that destroy.
I have a problem with the term “constructive criticism.”   It matters not to me what word is put in front of criticism it remains criticism.  I am all for correction and instruction, but I believe that is different to making someone feel inadequate.
They reckon a rut is just a grave with the ends kicked out.  It is too easy to be in a rut bagging another.  Perhaps it has been a habit.  Perhaps I am unsure of myself and implying superiority makes me feel better about myself.  There are probably heaps of reasons why it is done but I have not come across any that are legitimate.
I make judgement calls all the time.  From choosing a party to lead the nation to deciding on a place to get take away.  Once I have made a choice, it is not about pulling down what I have not chosen to go with, but determining why someone or something is better.  I will reconsider down the track but my decision at the time was based on what was available at the time.
I made a habit of listening to sales reps. carefully.  I was disinclined to go with anyone who pulled down the opposition.  I knew that if offered the right deal that sales rep. would be working for the opposition tomorrow.
I watched an interview about someone’s short comings in the covid crisis.  I know I need to exercise wisdom and discretion when making decisions, but I thought the question asked received the right response.  It was asked “should they be sacked?”  The answer was no, and I did agree.  To me it was unnecessary pulling down made worse by the fact there was no-one obviously better.
There are no doubt times when the answer is yes.  But even then, often the person is just in the wrong job.  Losing does not mean I am a loser.  I am a winner who is lost.  Not all caps fit me.  I just need to find the right cap and wear it.
The way I see the world helps me make sense of the world.  I know I could be eating grass in a field very easily.  But I am not.  I am here and this way.  While I am this way, I see the world this way.
