Protests

4/8/2020

Victoria is back in a stricter lock down.  At the same time I see thousands of people on the streets in Germany protesting the lock downs.    Apparently they have not been hit as hard as some places in Europe.
Doing well seems to be such a double-edged sword.  There seems to be a lack of appreciation as to how serious the matter is.  Merril and I look at the cases in Victoria.  The best-case scenario is that 1% die.  If we see figures of 600 that is 6 deaths.
There is a perception that it is an old person’s disease, even though we know it gets young people sometimes.  What seems to be lacking is an understanding or caring that most deaths cause grief.  It normally affects a number of people.
I would not wish it on anyone, but it seems for some to not demand their “rights” they need to be directly affected.  Until that happens though they affect many others but do not seem to care.
Some say, “oh they were old and due to go anyway.”  I can only relate it to how I felt about one doctor asking me my dads age and finding out he was 92 and saying he has had a good innings.  It was almost like “he can go.”  Not as far as I was concerned though.  Yes he had had a good innings, but I knew there was life in him yet.  He lived another five years and on the whole enjoyed a good quality of life.
Actually the older I get the more impressed I am.  I feel I understand better that to live to 97 takes something special.  I find being 62 hard enough.  But I have always looked older than I am anyway.  To be walking through Bunnings with my dad and having an attendant say “it good to see brothers out and about” says it all really.  Dad was chuffed.  I wasn’t.
I was thinking this morning about boxing matches that are 12 rounds.  I may win round 7.  At that point, the judges do not say, “he won the round, the fight is over.”  No, I need to be in front after 12 rounds.  One good round is not enough.  I need to keep doing what works.
There is a guy I play often in table tennis.  Sometimes I have really good days and win.  Generally, that is cause for rejoicing on my part and I want to talk about it.  Yet I know my opposition is not as happy for me.  They want to win.  They love chess and studying battles.  They work out a strategy so that next time they are ready for me and I need to step up and take it a step further if I want to win again.
I was so impressed one time playing a guy at the club (as impressed as I can be losing).  We were two games all and six all (this had to be the last game.  Whoever won it won).  At six all my opponent changed his strategy.  I know I would have worked it out.  But I did not have time.  I lost.  Well done them (please ignore these gritted teeth).
The point for me is, one good day does not mean I have won.  Doing well does not mean I have won either.  I need to win in the long term.  I can protest all I like but lock down can be just around the corner.
