Procrastination

Procrastination
“Don’t say one day, that day will never come” goes the song.  I thought of that song because I was listening to a song this morning that says, “don’t just stand there gazing at the east just walk that way.”  It was called Someday by a guy called Greg. X. Volz.  I reckon that is a great handle.  I mean, how many handles have an x and a z in them.  It would not surprise me if they are there, but I was wondering what the x stood for.  I don’t know of any names starting with x.  All I can think of is Xerox but I don’t think he is Greg Xerox Volz.
I thought he made a really good point though.  It seems so easy for me to get stuck.  A decision needs to be made but inertia takes over.  I have a friend who says if three things align he will go ahead.  There is no need to agonize over it.
I saw a Hagar cartoon where Lucky Eddie said to Hagar, “never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.”  Hagar said, “good idea, I was going to have tomorrow off.”  I am not sure that is what was meant.
Someone said that procrastination is like a credit card.  It is a lot of fun until you get the bill.  The thing that gets me about procrastination is the assumption.  There is the assumption I have time.  Thing is, I don’t know that.  The law of averages says I do, but the law of averages also says I don’t.
There was a guy in one of the places I first worked.  He proclaimed one day “Don’t assume.”  That stuck with me.  It has been one of the drivers of my actions.  The only way I can be sure it is done is to do it.  I really do not like procrastination deferring stuff.  When I see that happen the inclination is to just get in and do it if I can.  Besides doing it means I can do other cool stuff.  I like the saying “Procrastination is opportunities assassin.”
I have never been one to think that all decisions need to be made immediately.  But all decisions need consideration.  It is foolish to rush into things when other perspectives are helpful.  There are decisions that need to be made on the spot.  We need more milk.  That is a no brainer.  That can be made quickly and does not need a committee to put it in triplicate and make a decision on next month.
But moving to Easter Island would be one I would consider and seek the advice of others on.  That to me is not procrastinating.  If I really felt to go and put it off that would be procrastinating to me.
Gretchen Rubin said, “Working is one of the most dangerous forms of procrastination.”  I thought to myself, “That’s heavy dude.”  I’ve since found out Gretchen is a girl.  I should have thought “That’s heavy dudess.”
Oh well.  I think I see where she is coming from.  It is easy to let the good get in the way of the best.  So much I should do, and need to do, but I do not want to let that cause me to procrastinate about other things I need to do to.
