Power Outage

30/4/2024

I guess it is true that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.
We had a planned power outage here yesterday.  It was scheduled to go from 8am to about 3pm.  Of course we forgot about it.  We had things planned and only realized the implications of having no power when we could not do stuff we had planned.
Naturally one of the first things we discovered is we could not make boil the kettle to make a coffee.  First world problem I know but what a problem!  Caffeine is important.   Fortunately we have gas so we knew we could boil a kettle when it came to it.  And it did come to it.
But our starter for the gas is electrically driven.  I soon discovered I would need a match to light the gas.  I had to scrummage around as I have not had a match since Superman died.
It is incredible what I take for granted until I am without it.  My room really needs to be lit to see anything.  The lights would not work.  That was true for the whole house and the done up shed where we entertain visitors.
No worries, I will watch some tele.  Er.  No power so watching tele was out.  I will do some computer stuff.  Umm it runs on mains.  Certainly, it lasts a little while until the battery runs out.    Even using a mobile was a luxury for a while.  Though it needed to be turned off to conserve power.  Fortunately we have a couple of solar chargers so there would be some life if and when it was needed.
There was other stuff that could be done that did not require mains power.  So we did that but not before a sleep.  Sleep seemed like one thing we could that did not require mains.
The power came back on around 1pm so we could do what we had in mind then.
It was good to have it back.  It did make me realize how dependent I am on electricity.   Definitely something to be enjoyed and not taken for granted.
