Position and Place

I was thinking how the treadmill encourages us to make it to the top of the ladder - as if being on the top of the ladder is the measure of my success or otherwise. Yet I must admit I am seeing a problem. I ask myself if everyone is at the top then who is holding me up?
(the top is a great place to be, but I really do not think it is a great place to be for its own sake. It is only a great place to be if that is the place for me)
Another problem that appears to me (and I do not look for why nots) is that is everyone supposed to be a mouthpiece for the organization? Everything in me says the one who is down the ladder and perhaps unseen, is vital to holding up the one at the top.
How important an unseen participant is is often seen when something goes wrong. Like for me, I am unaware of my fingers until I cut them. Then it seems like I am made up of nothing but my fingers. I do all I can to make them right, so the rest of me functions as it should. Everyone comes to the aid of one that is hurting as any organization is only as strong as its weakest link.
I think I am selling myself short if I think being at the top is what I need to aim for. It is like the position becomes more important to me than my rightful place. Truth is I may not like being at the top. I may be totally uncomfortable. It may just not be me.
Mine may be a support role. A not so obvious role but vital. Without me and ones like me the one at the top may be too distracted to espouse the company vision. They may spend so much time putting out fires they lack credibility.
For me the position I attain is not the main thing but being satisfied to function in my place. Quality rises to the top anyway, so I do not need to pull others down to pull myself up. I can safely encourage another knowing that I will end up in the place I am meant to be and though I may appear to be delayed, I will not be stopped.
