Holidays are like a special event.  They do not happen every day, so I am writing a bit about ours.
As is always the case I determine a theme for the holiday when I get there.   It seemed right that photography was the theme for this one.  Both Merril and I were into it, and there is enough variety here for us to stay interested.
There is no doubt morning and evening are the best time for photography.  The birds and animals are out then too.  They sure are harder to find at mid-day.  We also learned that in winter there are less animals about.  It seems everything goes into hunker down mode.
But we were determined to get shots even if it meant putting a new slant on a familiar object.  One thing here I said to Merril “I have photographed that so often.”  She told me she had to.
Merril tends to remember way more than me when it comes to lessons, but I do remember reading somewhere it is important not to get shots from the usual position of head height standing or sitting.  So I was all set to take shots from unusual angles.  I think I only got the chance to do it once though.
I have been experimenting with manual shots.  These days it seems even the best cameras are point and shot.  What I have wanted to do is make clear an item that may be behind other things.  The thing with point and shot is the focus is generally on what is closest so often what is behind something is unclear.  They are the items I have focused on.
It has though led to some disappointment as I have taken what I thought was a great shot only to find when I have a look at it that it is blurry.  So what I tend to do these days is take a point and shoot shot, and then an experimental shot.   I am sure the connotation is different to its original application, but it is a case of shoot first and ask questions later.  It is the shot that matters to me, and not how I get it.
Birds in particular are not obliging in waiting around until I have all ready for a picture.  Though the elusive Pipe owl has proved not to be so elusive on the Island.  I was able to get real close to one this afternoon.
The upside has been that I have been way more selective in my shots.  Pictures seem to almost multiply on the computer.  There are heaps I will never use but deleting them seems to involve more work than I want to put into it.
Anyway I will see what I have got.  Lots of time can be spent examining or discarding photo’s.  Hopefully there are some goodies.
