photography like me, a work in progress

Merril said it the other day and it is true – photography helps you appreciate things more.  Certainly you don’t need to be a photographer to know we live in a beautiful part of the world, but photography causes you to see both the big and small picture.  Everything has a story.
I commented recently that there is a day’s photography just out the back of the cabin we are staying at.  When it is dark you hear the wallabies bounding around, or the goannas scraping their way to where ever they are going.  In the early morning the canvas gradually becomes light.  It is a soft light.  At first the sunlight appears in the tops of the trees before making its way to ground level and back again.
When you are there as an observer animals come to you.  There is a time and a place for everything, and this is not the time for crashing about.  When things do not know you are there, they tend to do what comes naturally.  That, to me, is what is worth capturing on film.
Of course not everyone who dons a camera is a “photographer” but one thing I have noticed is that everyone who wants to, gets better.  Living in the digital age helps.  Once upon a time you paid for every shot both good and bad.  These days the only consequence of a bad shot is deletion.
I class myself as a novice but I would like to think I am getting better.  There are others I know who pick up a camera and every shot seems to have the asa, iso, f-stop and all calibrations right.
I’m not there yet but I love it.  Sometimes I take a photo and it takes my breath away.  It is right.  It is like playing the perfect golf shot or hitting a back hand winner in table tennis when you know everything was right.  That hope keeps me coming back.
Photography is a challenge.  I will never arrive but I sure am enjoying the journey.
