Peak

I am definitely later today than I might have been.  Our next-door neighbour is away and has said I can use his bin.  I had the bin but did not get a chance to fill it till this morning.  Rubbish collection is early today so I filled it with garden stuff early.  That is done now and the bin is in place to be collected.
Before I filled the bin, I did the dictionary spin thing with eyes closed seeing what word my finger would fall on.  The first one I did was the end of a section and when I looked I had pointed to a blank page. If I had followed that one, I would have had nothing to write about.
I did it again and my finger fell on the word “peak”.  I was amazed at how many peaks there were.  There is a peak in a ship related to the projected part of the bow.  There is like the peak of a mountain and peak times booking accommodation.  And then there is the one my finger fell on.  I have never heard it used and think it may have been used more in times gone by.
I actually thought it may be defunct, but Merriam-Webster had it.  Peak “to grow thin or sickly, to dwindle away.”  I must confess I was a little disappointed to find it again.  I was hoping otherwise, and it was no longer current.  But it was, and I had to write about it, at the time knowing nothing about it.
An Online Etymology Dictionary came to my aid, partially, declaring “from past participle of the obsolete or dialectal verb.”  The sentence it is used in is from the 1540’s.  That sort of made me feel better that I had not heard peak used in those terms.  Though I must admit there is something in the back of my mind that makes me think I have heard it before.  Last century.
The thing is, I do not think that I look sickly.  I know I do not feel it.  So I really do not have any excuse for not getting up and doing something.  What that is I do not know, as I have determined to spend this day as I try to do.  Have it off.  Not doing nothing (though very possible) but doing what I reckon needs to happen around the place.
I do have a busy few days coming up, but I have decided to just list what needs to be done and treat that stuff as a “tomorrow” thing and forget about it today.
That’ the plan anyway.  See how I go.
