Passion

I have been considering the reasons people do stuff.  Work requires that certain things get done, and if I have any sense, I just do it.  But what about when I do not have to do stuff?  What about when there is just stuff to be done?
I get in and do the simple things.  It is not like, “I’m not going to do that as I have not been asked.”    Where I can, and when I am involved in the playing out of that activity, I will commit to the task at hand.
There are simple roles that are the domain of all.  It may be setting up for a meeting or setting the table.  Everyone who can needs to be willing to do that if they are invested in the activity.  Though when there are enough doing whatever already, I will not do it.  I have for a long time been of the opinion that “enough is enough”.
Also, I will not commit to something I am unqualified to do, just because it is not getting done. More complicated tasks are not the role of everyone.
It is just the way I am.  For others it is not just the way they are.  That is ok, but I do think one thing is required for any role - passion.
Someone I know is not cut out for money taking.  Although my self-interest does not mind when they do it, as we always seem to make more money than expected.  I am ok on figures, but do not ask me to do the electricity.
It is like the advertisement currently on that shows someone as really good studying Tiger Sharks but terrible fixing the pipes.  That calls for someone qualified.  To me there are tasks that require the right qualifications.
But that is not all that is required. They require a passion for it when not being paid to do it.  That is what I have been considering.  The difference between doing something because I have to and doing something because I want to.
I read somewhere recently that that is a dilemma faced by hiring firms.  Applicants can tick all the right boxes.  On paper they may look perfect.  But that is the trouble.  It is on paper only until the person shows for the task.
That was borne out to me in my job.  One person ticked all the boxes, but I was so glad when they left.  The next person not only ticked all the right boxes but willing assisted others to achieve the aim.  The passion was more for the job than for the title.
Maybe it is just a “it was better in my day” thing, but it seems these days people are willing to do only what they are paid to do.  Getting down and dirty if needed is not on the cards.  It has to be in the job description.
That to me is the difference between someone who does something because it is their passion, and someone who does something because they see it only as a means to an end.
The weird thing is, I find so often it is the person that not only ticks the boxes, but has the passion, that gets to the place they would both like to be.
