Pantry

Yesterday did not turn out as planned, but it was a good day anyway.
We normally run a market on the 1st and 3rd Saturday each month (and Wednesday).  Yesterday another group used the area we normally use for a market.  We did learn from it though.  It is all in the set up.  We cordoned off one area but not the other.  It was the area we did not cordon off that was used.  They say a mistake only remains a mistake if it is not learned from.  I reckon we will be right next time.
We actually found ourselves with time off we did not expect.  Merril offered to cook a couple of things for a “thank you” that was happening after the pantry closed.  It was a thank you to everyone who had contributed to keep the pantry running.
Merril and I had been invited.  We run the market with all proceeds going to the pantry.
What was clear to see was the number of people it takes to run the panty.  All are volunteers.  One works all week and then volunteers of a Saturday to serve.
A number of people who normally help out could not make it.  But there were drivers who pick up donated and inexpensive food stuffs from various locations. Trips to pick up items happen most days of the week.  Then there are those who take delivery of items and price them and then put them on the shelves.
Making the best use of the space is an art in itself.  Items are sold cheap and clients know it.  Although the pantry is only open twice a week from 9.30 to 1pm, clients line up early to get bargains.  Some things are free like bread and veges and they are popular.
Then there are the people that serve the clients.  Others help out as they can with items and supplies to clients and staff.
All in all it is a team effort.  They say it takes a village to raise a child.  It takes a village to run a pantry, and all are necessary and appreciated.  Yesterday was a thank you for helpers.
