Organized

I was reading something today that brought back memories big time.  It was about time management.
At work I was always keen to get things out the way.  One thing I heard that I adopted was if something comes along that will take less than five minutes to do, just do it.  I did find that really helpful.  It meant tasks were not hanging over my head, and I could devote quality time to things that took longer, with an uncluttered mind.  But doing that was sometimes not a good look.  My desk could make it look like I had nothing to do.
I was reading about time management before, and it contained what I thought was a good idea for general life.
Sometimes something cannot be achieved in an hour block.  I might be busy with heaps of other things, but the task I cannot get to is important.  The article was saying sometimes it is not possible to give a straight hour to something important.  But it is possible to give ten minute blocks to it through out the day.  Before I know it, an hour has been achieved and I have done what needed to be done.
The book contained what I thought were a number of good ideas.  One of them was something I see Merril do.  Sometimes a task requires peace and quiet and maximum concentration.  In those instances, the door just needs to be shut.  It is not a declaration of independence, or saying that people are not important, it is just saying I really need to do this thing, and the only way I can do it is to declare my unavailability for the next two hours or whatever it may be.
I thought it was good what they said about drop by visitors.  People are welcome for sure, but I have nothing when I do not attend to me.  It sounds selfish but it is the exact opposite.  I love people and I love visitors, but no-one benefits if my mind is elsewhere.
It is one of the reasons I suggest people ring me before they come over.  For a start that is basic self-interest.  No-one may be home.  Or I may have things that need doing right now, but later is ok.
What was suggested (and I had never thought of this) is that rather than take a seat, - remain standing when someone comes.  That sends a message that something else is going on right now.  Another thing they suggested that may be a bridge too far for me, was to stand by the door.
I need to know in myself what constitutes an unreasonable interruption and what may be opportunity knocking.  If my being busy is as a result of my previous slackness, I can miss out more easily.
That is one of the reasons why I try to be organized (emphasis on try).  It is tough being overwhelmed with tasks when I would not be if I were organized.  I guess it brings home to me something else I hold to.  “Most people do not have a problem, they just have a decision to make.”
