One Foot in Front of the Other

It seems to me that sometimes one foot after the other is just the way to go.
It is not that the task should not be done.  It definitely should be, but there is not a lot of ra ra or inspiration going with it.   There definitely may have been but it maybe I am like 24 kilometres into a 50 kilometre race.
I knew before I started it was the right thing to do.  I knew the rewards for myself were great.  I could think of all the reasons why what I was doing was a good thing.  Not only was it right for me, but the benefits would be long term and definitely affect others positively.
Yet into the race I am rethinking the worth of it all.  It would be way easier for me to call it a day.  I could probably justify to myself reasons for quitting early.  All the reasons I give would possibly be legitimate.  Others would understand.  I could have conversations about my failed attempt and there is a good chance many would agree with my reasoning.  And then go onto the next conversation with someone else.
Yet I am the one that lives with me.  I may really be rueing a lost opportunity.  I may be living a lot if “what if’s”
It seems to me that so often the good is the enemy of the best.  There is no doubt in my mind that 24 kilometres is better than no kilometres.  But I would always be wondering did I stop just before I got my second wind?  I would always be asking myself what potentially lay beyond the 24 kilometres?  I would hate to give up and miss the strength I needed and would be mine with a little more perseverance.
To me potentially it would be a test postponed rather than cancelled.  For me 24 kilometres may be a good thing, and one never achieved before, but 50 kilometres would be the best thing.  It would represent a goal and milestone achieved that could open visas undreamed of for me.
I will never know though until the 50 kilometres is achieved.
