On For Young and Old

We were watching Grand Designs and I found what the guy said really interesting.  It had been a really hard build.  The guy who had a young child was determined to do it all himself to save money.  What was planned for a year took four.  He had also moved to Tasmania with his wife and was working and getting more work.  It meant he could devote less time to his own home.
Eventually it was done and it was great.  It was built with a river view and the end product was described as simple but complex.  He said a couple of things that caught my attention.  He said he was looking for his limits and he found them.
But what he said that I dwelled on was “four years when you are twenty are not four years when you are forty.  I must admit I really did not notice it when I was forty but I do having turned sixty (now sixty plus).
Things that took time before, take longer now.  Mentally I can achieve the same things.  Physically I cannot.  I am definitely more inclined these days to let a young fella do the heavy lifting.  If there are none around I invent an easier way to do what I would just get in and do once.
The point for me is there is young and there is old.  I do not know when that time is reached mentally but physically there comes a time of deterioration.  Mentally I can have an old head on young shoulders or it may be I never get an old head.  I am a kid mentally all my life.
Still it is good younger ones go off to war and there is an age limit on joining.  Maybe in my head I can do all I did but reality proves differently.
They talk about being older and wiser.  Older is a given, wiser is a choice.  I do reckon both are needed.  They call it the enthusiasm of youth and to me it is great.  I remember my dad calling me in because it was dark, but I was still outside because I had a job I wanted to finish.
I was young and enthusiastic.  These days I am likely to say “that can wait until tomorrow.”  The job gets done but it takes longer that is all.
That is why it is good to have younger ones around.  Older people do get good ideas (believe it or not) but it needs younger ones to make it happen in a timely manner.
I am big on teams.  A mixture of young and old is a good thing.
