Off into the netherworld it went.  It was only the most important thing I had ever written.  Every word was important.  The whole thing was a quote.  You don’t believe me.  Ok then.  You are right.  But it was important to me.  I had invested time and effort into it.  It had involved some thinking.  Not necessarily a lot mind you but some.
It was a topic that was important to me.  A line of thought that I had pursued.  I was pondering it.  I had finish it and thought that I could add to it or change it as required.  Then I made a terrible mistake.  I tried to save it.
It asked me something it has never asked me before.  It wanted me to log in.  I thought how can it want that when this is my computer.  I will log in if I want to.  If that had been uppermost in my mind I would have done it.  But no.  This time it said I needed to.  It said give me the email address.
I thought that was easy.  There is only one email I use.  Thing is, things I joined before I finished work were harder.  I had used a work email for them.  Often now it says it will send me an email with the code on it to access the page for a new password.  That would be well and good except the emails go to my old address which is non-existent to me now.  No one can access it.
Probably some miscellaneous hacker could.  Working in the dead of night.  Accessing paths I did not know even existed.  Good for him.  But not for me.  Or the administrator. Or anyone else really.
On one particular device I visited the Apple store and access was open for 24 hours.  I did what I had to do so my drawings could be gotten to.  Very important really.  To me anyway.  The door opened and then it closed.  Access became a thing of the past.  For a moment access became a bright shining light illuminating all.  Then it died and all was dark again.  Perhaps that is a bit dramatic, but I am going to go with it.
In this case an email was easy.  I put it in and then it wanted my password.  That was definitely harder.  We have a formula we follow.  I used that but it did not work.  All I wanted to do was save the thing, which I have done many many times before.  I know things change.  Mostly I am ok to go with it.  When I am not, I just close the program without a second thought.
Then I thought of a clever plan.  I would shut the computer without saving the file.  I have done that before and it has always brought up the program asking me if I wanted to save it.  I thought that was what I would do, and see if this was just an anomaly or the way things are now.
So, I shut the computer and it opened everything again.  Everything that is except the file I wanted.  Other files in the same program opened.  Stuff I could have taken or left.  But what I had typed had gone.  Disappeared.  Vanished.
But I am not bitter and twisted.  I can live with all my hard work disappearing.  I don’t mourn the loss of time spent coming up with the right words and phrases.  I can do it all again if I want to.  Now there is the rub.
