New Beginning

31/8/2020

Every ending is a new beginning.  A card I like says something similar, “every sunset is a sunrise in another place.”  Very similar really.  And as Seneca said, “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.”
Endings are bittersweet.  I do always feel a sense of relief when the call comes out “pencils down and hands on desks,” or something similar that means the same.  Even if I was not properly prepared, the end of something is always better than the beginning.  It’s a relief it is over.
Saying goodbye to people is always hard.  When I lived on the southside of Brisbane I had a mate who had polio.  We did heaps together.  Moving this far north put an end to our seeing each other in person as it was too far to drive.  That was not easy.
Leaving my friends in Townsville was hard.  I was born there, grew up there, had had several jobs there and made good friends there.  I ended up living in a house next to the hospital where I was born.  A good thing was, when there was a power blackout, we had power as we were on the same grid as the hospital.
But the ending was a new beginning.  I had no idea how it would work out when I moved to Brisbane, and only knew two people here.  But no regrets.  Bit like the author Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club) said “My stories always have these twisted happy endings, and the boy always gets the girl.”  That’s me.  Twisted - tick.  Happy Ending – so far so good, and no reason to believe the final ending will not be that way.  Boy gets girl - tick.
I am not one to imagine things are showstoppers.  Too often I have seen good ideas abandoned because one thing that was bad ended everything.  It comes to a premature ending.  Most stuff can be worked out if there is a mind to do it.  Something I say regularly is “eat the worms and spit out the germs.”  I happen to believe if there is bad mixed with the good the good is worth keeping.
In many ways people are the least of my worries when it comes to happy endings.  It’s me I need to deal with.  I relate to something Mel Gibson said “…every day is a new beginning, because boy, how many mistakes do you make in a day? I don't know about you, but I make plenty. You can't turn the clock back, so you have to look ahead.”
I know success and failure.  I am thankful for the successes and as for the failures I am with Desmond Tutu on that one. “Forgiveness says you are given another chance to make a new beginning.”  Been there, done that.  Works for me.
Today is a new beginning!  Think I’ll go back to bed.
