Need

We have a freezer at home.  I know I know, that is so unusual and out there, NOT.  It is a biggy.  Fridge sized.  Someone at QUT was selling it.  It has served us well.
The thing is, now it is making an incredible racket.  By incredible racket I mean I can just hear it above silence.  Still, it wasn’t making that noise before, and now it is.  It would not surprise me if its days were numbered (Sometimes my perceived need is only a want in disguise, but that freezer has been a goodie.)
It was only when I was trying to alleviate the noise that I got to thinking.  I thought maybe all that was needed was ensuring any wrapped stuff was away from the internal fan.  I ensured that was the case, but the problem went deeper than that. 
 One day we will need to downsize.  I did it with property.  I owned a place in Dale St that was 2/3rds of an acre.  I moved to Rebecca St which was smaller.  The property Merril and I now inhabit is smaller again.  In each case stuff has needed to be jettisoned.  Do we miss it? Nup.
I am big on sometimes my thinking my needing something is only me thinking I need it.  Sometimes more space or another cupboard is genuinely needed, and in that case it is go for it.  At other times it is a case of better using what I have. 
I saw this with my dad.  He is no longer with us, so unable to defend himself.  Well, he is unlikely to, but if he does, then there is a good chance this writing will stop now.  Another cupboard would invariably be used but it was often used to spread.  It is known that nature abhors a vacuum, but it seems people do too.  Often a space has to be filled.  The thing is, often it is seen as unusable as it is occupied already.  Answer.  Another cupboard.
It seems to me that sometimes stuff is kept, not because it is needed, but because there is a place for it.  If the place becomes unavailable, the perceived need disappears.  Enough is what I need.  More than enough is a luxury.  Every time though I would rather have more than enough than not enough.
Many businesses are running like that these days.  Instead of having money tied up in copious quantities of stock, they have enough and get more as they need it.
I will always need what I need.  There are many things I want and I am glad to have them.  But I will always try not to confuse what I want with what I need.
