As is my custom I shut my eyes and turned the dictionary this way and that and then put my finger down wondering what word it pointed to.
I could not believe what it pointed to this morning when I did that.  “Music.”  In many ways that has defined a good bit of my life.  We have always had a piano in the house.  For many years it was a Beal.
I do remember moving into a unit, that was up some stairs, and one of the removalists suggesting it might be better if I learned the mouth organ next time.  Another lot of removalists did not really know what they were doing.  I had evidence in my driveway for years as the cement was gouged out.  I could not believe how good the guy was who brought it from Ayr in North Queensland to Burpengary.  He moved it by himself, and I have never seen someone do it as efficiently or well.
I asked a piano tuner to tune it to concert pitch if he could.  He happily told me later he could.
I loved playing that piano.  I wrote heaps of songs on that one.  I would have lots of people over and we would have sing alongs.  One guy I knew played double bass and would “jam” at the drop of a hat.   I will never forget him ringing and asking, “did you drop your hat?”  Another guy played saxophone and could bring tears to a glass eye.  I threw to him often saying “just the saxophone.”  Anyone there loved it.
I ended up giving that piano to the neighbour.  I remember delivering it.  Four of us did it.  One on each corner.  The trouble for me was we had some stairs to ascend before deciding where it was going.  We put one end at the top of the stairs and three of the movers decided to look where it was going.  That left me holding the piano.  I know I am strong but I’m not a show off.  When I pointed out my dilemma they came to my aid.
These days I have a you beaut electric one.  Not easily transportable but a goodie.  It has all sorts of capabilities.
Since my stroke my singing is probably better described as “warbling,” but I do play the piano occasionally.  It brings back good memories and I make new ones.
