Move On

I generally write about stuff we are engaged in. Something has happened over the last few days that has blown me away.

Myna birds. They are not our favourite birds and in fact if we never saw any here, we would not be disappointed.

Once a month I have a get together here. We call it Menzone. We have a bbq breakfast and chat. Out in the bbq area a couple of Myna birds had built a nest up high and would create a real mess. It was too high for us to get at, but our electrician, when changing the light, got rid of the nest and they have not been back to the area.

In reading about them I learned that in summer they pair off, and in winter they are seen in large flocks. The nest in the light area was a summer problem, and the later one was a winter problem.

We had decided to build a nice area under a big tree we have. We put a couple of seats there intending to sit in that area on occasions. The trouble was, a huge flock of Myna birds decided at the same time to inhabit the tree. Consequently we could not use the area as it became too messy with bird droppings in no time.

This is where what happened next blew me away.

One day I got a real sense that what was happening was destructive and that our area to sit had been stolen from us. We love birds and encourage them to visit our place, but these ones seemed to be wrecking the place. Based on what I had read and an authority I had been led to believe I had, I did something I have never done before. I told Merril about it, and we did it together.

What I find incredibly amazing is that was several days ago. The Myna’s no longer use our tree to roost. To our delight they have moved on.

We are very thankful and wrapped the birds no longer roost in our tree.
