Mother's Day

11/5/2019

It is Mothers day again.  Amazing.  It only seems like a year since the last one.
It seems ladies love to have kids.  The pain of child birth is soon forgotten with the arrival of little Jonny or little Mary.
Not that kids are always good of course.  They can be angels and they can be terrors.  One thing is for sure, they are loved, and often make us laugh.  Then they are all grown up and leave the nest.  My mum thought I was goody two shoes as a kid.  Lol.  Boy did I set her straight.  If the good die young then I should live long and prosper.
For mothers though, kids are a long term investment.  Although they need looking after long term, it is particularly true when they can not look after themselves.  Then there is school to negotiate and the teenage years.  The seeking of independence in a protective environment.  Finally, it is young adulthood and their long term relationships.
I do love how roles are often reversed.  Parents look after kids and then kids look after parents.  There is less of that in our society, but in some places it is a given.  I am sure it is easier said than done, but I am not into making a shrine.  I hear of rooms left the way they were, or preparing and taking food for someone who is no longer there.  My thinking is, move on.  Certainly grieve, but time does not stand still and nor should I.
Apparently we have 27 kids.  I didn’t know that.  I would not recognise them if I saw them.  Having only been married five years I wondered how that was possible but it is. Five a year and seven the last year.  That is a miracle at our age.
Whatever the case, kids are more than academic.  There is love and protection involved in spades.  Joy and sorrow and pride is thrown in.  A friend of mine said where ever her kids go a part of her heart always goes with them.  If kids were not a joy, then grandparenting would not be as desirable.
One of the things I love about kids is I’m a hero.  Let them find out the truth soon enough, but enjoy it while I can.
I should not be amazed, but I never cease to marvel at how the kids reflect the parents.  Dad supports a team, so it is the kids team.  Mum is into art and the piano and the kids love to paint and take up a musical instrument.  I suppose there is a certain amount in their genes as well that they got from their parents.
One of the upshots of being a mum is Mother’s Day.  It is a great reminder of what it meant for them to have us.  I may never see the tears cried in secret, but whatever happens, mums share in it.
