Monty Python

“My pen is the hand of a ready writer,” someone once said.  Or something like that.  For me sometimes that is true and at other times it is not.  When it is not it reminds me of the Monty Python album “The Contractual Obligation Album.”
I have committed myself to writing something every day.  There are exceptions but they are just that – exceptions.  Most days I write something.  I actually like it and think it is good for me.  I constantly have my ears open for something to write about.
Today I had nothing really but when I thought of the Monty Python album, I was reminded of how much I enjoyed watching that show.  It was in the days before you tube or watching on demand.  If I missed it, that was it.  I would need to make sure I was in front of the tv the next week when it came on.
I loved it and rarely missed it.  They reckon we laugh at the ridiculous.  It is no wonder that show was considered so funny.  I know I got a giggle out of watching a shop attendant try to convince a customer that a bird nailed to a perch was not dead but just sleeping.  Or seeing the players in the philosopher’s football game walk around with their hands behind their backs contemplating great things when the whistle blew.  Scoring goals was a coincidence and resulted from a philosopher inadvertently kicking a ball while walking and contemplating.
I did not consider they needed a picture to be funny.  I only heard one of their albums, but I have never forgotten the picture it painted in my mind.  Commentary came from two people commenting as on radio.  An orchestra was about to perform, and the head violinist had a mishap with his violin.  A world-renowned player loaned him his very rare and very expensive Stradivarius violin.  It was considered a selfless gesture. And he broke it.  The owner was not happy.  A big fight broke out in the orchestra pit.  The skit ended with the big bass drummer hoping into his drum and rolling out into the crowd.
Bedlam in my head.  All painted by words.
It was no wonder to me when one of them produced his own show later (John Cleese – Fawlty Towers) it had some classic moments.  Like having to find the rat before the food inspector arrived.  It had been sold to his assistant as a hamster.  And the rat emerging from the food box right in front of the food inspector and Fawlty fainting.
I did not take to everything they produced, but some of it in my opinion was pure genius.
